Don’t Build A Business, Build A Cult.

The Revolting Marketeer

News can now be viewed and consumed as it happens and I am not talking about the usual 10pm show. TV programmes are being replaced by online, anytime access box sets whilst social media is still growing with the average person spending around 1 hour and 40 minutes per day on five sites. The way we digest and share information has dramatically changed and continues to do so. The gaming industry continues to grab people’s attention with the market worth in excess of $91 billion.

To get talked about is becoming harder and harder as everyone either watches, talks or surfs different places at different times.

What is in today is gone under a barrage of further data tomorrow. At the same time IF you do find a subject that catches the attention, you can become a global hit in seconds.

So how do you create noise? How do you stand out in what is a ridiculously crowded market? How do you leave a message that shifts?

The simplest way to think about it is to build yourself a cult. No not the cloak wearing, tree hugging and then being wiped out by the FBI type cult. The person or thing that is popular or fashionable among a group or section of society cult.

A cult gains traction as people are drawn toward it. The members become ambassadors and encourage others to join, messaging zealots even. They speak about you glowingly as they want others to find out about you. They go out of their way to interact and be part of the movement. Okay, so you get it? But how do you build one?

Well, firstly you must create something that gets spoken about as being fresh, standing out and has purpose. Then look at how you can help your followers, what you can provide them to keep them involved and updated on new events. In effect, the cult must be attractive to the kinds of people you wish to attract. So think about them and not you.

If you make it all about you no one will follow and you will be sitting in a little tent all by yourself wondering what went wrong. Most importantly though is to keep it fresh, keep giving and realise that to build a cult takes time, strategy, dedication and potentially a different mindset.

Does your business stack up? Could you look again at what you are from a different point of view? Have you got what it takes to get people talking about you?

The results in a recent survey I ran shows that business people when looking for a new product or business turn to their network first in nearly all instances. How do you get them talking about you? If you are focused on the consumer, how can you get your customer to talk about you online and what can you do to make it worth their while?
